Longreach State High School operates a student leadership program known as the Student Representative Council (SRC). Student members of the SRC are nominated by their fellow students at the beginning of the academic year, and as such, represent all students in the school and organise ways for students to participate in school life.
The key roles of the SRC are to build connections between students and the school, to provide a platform for students’ voices and opinions, as well as to provide an excellent foundation in leadership training and opportunities.
Some of the main activities undertaken by these students include:
- Improvements to the school environment and facilities
- Organisation of events
- Participation inschool events (Open Night, Ceremonies, Sports Carnivals)
- Fundraising
The Council is coordinated by a Facilitating Staff member. The Council meets at least once per fortnight; however, student SRC representatives are aware of extra time required by them on occasion as part of their commitment to their role. Some of the common characteristics of Student Representatives are commitment, a sense of responsibility to their local community, enthusiasm, a strong sense of work ethic and the possession of leadership qualities.
Student Representative Council is an invaluable committee that plays an integral role in student leadership and student representation. In 2023 students engaged with Y-Lead Maximing the Badge Program to develop their Leadership Qualities.
